Help Participants
Weather Market Volatility

Mutual of Omaha

Today's turbulent market can rattle the confidence of any participant, particularly the less savvy investors. After all, they're working hard to make retirement savings part of an already stretched budget. That's where you can help.

Participants may look to you for guidance, so encourage them to stay the course through market shifts. Here are a few strategies you can suggest to help them think long-term:

  • Maintain a diverse portfolio – Spread money over several different types of investments so if one type of investment declines in value, the overall impact on the portfolio may be limited
  • Don't try to "time" the market – Regular investing through automatic payroll deductions helps participants avoid the temptation to wait for the "perfect" time to invest, which puts them at risk of investing all their money at the top of the market when it's most expensive
  • Consider the historical returns of various investments – Generally stocks have shown the highest rate of return over time, but this is an average based on years of performance data
